I recently acquired a Dell with no hard drive so I decided to remove the hard drive from an old Packard Bell PC and installed it in the Dell. When I came to boot the Dell, I got a blue screen with the following error:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
----------

I've restarted the computer several times but still end up with the same error. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Remember that I'm not a PC user so imagine you're writing one of those dummy books. Thanks.

You have to boot up with start up floppy or CD and format the hard drive then install windows. the hard drive already has drivers do not match the new hard ware that's why the computer shuts off.

lol..Gotta luv it. Ok, here's what ya got. In (most) cases, hard drives from one machine can be installed into another, unless of course it has viruses and such that have the ability to keep it from booting. I write 'Antiviruses' and will assume that this is not your situation as it doesnt occur often. Being the most important device in your system, the hard drive MUST be configured in the "Bios" of your system. When you first turn on the computer, one of the first things you'll see is where it's giving you the option to hit either the "del" key or "F2" to go into the setup area. Do that. Once in, work your way to the hard drive info area and see if you can configure the new drive into the system so that it will recognize the MBR while it's booting up. The Master Boot Records contain the files that boot your system into windows so it's very a important facet of your startup. If the computer cant recognize the new hard drive, you'll keep getting that same error during the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death." Whenever you put in a hard drive from one computer to another and the HD still has windows on it, it is HIGHLY recommended to reformat the hard drive. This is because the information installed on the drive is specifically for the computer it came from (such as the drivers for certain hardware components) and will be incompatible with the new computer unless they are the exact same hardware components. So format the drive and do a clean install. This will remove the Blue Screen of Death.

Ok, here is your problem: Packard Bell computers, stored part of the Bios on the Hard drive, so what is happening is the computer is finding the stored part of the Bios on the hard drive and it is conflicting with the Bios on the Dell.

Your best solution is to get another Hard Drive and install it in the Dell computer. Though you will also need to know which Dell you have, to check on Dell's web site http://www.dell.com top see what size hard drive your computer will take.

Not compatible. See all the hardware is different. Such as the dvd and cd romsand other computer components that in the computer.. There is more to a computer than just the Harddrive and it needs to be formatted within the new computer. So you will most likely need a new HD.

you must re-install all OS (operating system), because only if you have windows ME or older on the old HD you can change to any manchine without problems, but if you had win 2000 or better installed on that disk, you must reinstall all again

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
