Yes and no. If you want to connect to the internet, and do not have a wireless card, and a wireless signal available to it, Yes.

If you have a wireless card, and a signal is available, then No.

so confusing here.

4 different types of internet connections
dial up (or connection to your cell phone with cable)
dsl (or satellite)
broadband
wireless

If youre laptop will connect via the modem, then thats all you need for the dial up service.
If you have a laptop that for some reason doesnt have a modem working in it, then there are internal cards or external modems that give you the capability.

Broadband and DSl have their own MODEMS.
your computer should have a ethernet connection -- looks like a phone connection but bigger. If you dont have one, you can buy a card that gives you one.
That MODEM is supplied by the cable company.

MODEM is the little black box that goes betwen your computer and the cable jack in the wall.
But Modem can also refer to the dial up modem that allows someone to use dial up internet or send faxes

Wont get too much into the wireless because that wasnt your question. I just new if I didnt add it some smartalick would add it in.

That depends what kind of laptop do you have? Do you have broadband? Or do you dial up to an ISP? Did the laptop come with a modem? Most newer ones do and a wireless card. Do you have an unsecure wireless network around where you live?

If you're using a dial-up service no you won't need a modem, just plug the phone line into the back of a computer and dial the number. If your Internet connection is a DSL or through your cable network, yes, you will need a modem.

Does it have an ethernet connector? should. Does it have wireless? should too. if you have both of those then no, you do not need a new modem. But you will still need one to connect to the internet for your whole network .. wait ... if you have one ofcourse. You need one modem total... :) Preferably with a wireless router built in.

These days, laptops have ports that allow you to use the internet without any extra components, the ports may be Ethernet or can be a 56k modem port.
Read your Laptop manual if you need help locating it.

If you dont have modem, and you want to connect to the internet, then you need one....If you dont have one and have some sort of wireless connection through a pc card drive/port, then you dont need one. If you have a built in wireless card, and can connect to a wireless network, then you dont need one.

Add details! You need a modem to connect to the net! What type of connection are you going to use? Cable? DSL? Dialup? You need to provide info on your laptop model too!
