*Carefully* save all your personal info: learn where it is! "My documents" is just a name. Then back 'em off. A re-install will trash and re-format the entire disk (I forgot a few photos, lost and gone forever).
Check beforehand with all your software package folks that (1) their stuff will run on XP and (2) what you'll have to do to re-install...(I had to get a new re-install key for a couple and I have so many programs installed that I infrequently use but like, I forgot to keep track!).
And finally, check some of your valuable settings, like screen appearance (silly but you'll like it) passwords set but maybe automatic and forgotten, etc. SAVE!
Then be prepared for a grueling week of re-install of all this crap. I had the good fortune of another computer nearby from which I could copy at least the settings, but the rest was still grueling.
(Now, in my case, this was just a re-install of an XP system, so perhaps my answer is pre-mature and someone here will provide better info, so wait and read on!)
Then just take a deep breath, be confident in yourself, and insert the CD and follow instructions and DO IT.

You have installed win98 in C: so that you can't format C: now if you just want to use win xp. You can try this method which is a temporary one, right click on My Computer -> click on Properties->click on Advanced-> click on System startup Settings tab. Here you can click on Edit button.Erase the option of win98 boot option. Save the notepad file Click on OK. Change the default operating system as Microsoft Windows XP Pro/Home/MC. Be careful when editing the notepad file. It would be better if you reformat the HDD.

The best way you can do it is first do a backup of your important information and be sure you have all the drivers your computer needs. Then do a clean Windows XP installation, so you have to format your hard disk. If you have the Win XP with service pack 2 is better if not you need an internet conection to download all the updates.
