I have just bough a 500Gb external USB 2 drive, formatted it NTFS and ended up with only 465Gb useable space. Where has 35Gb gone and can some of it be reclaimed?Or is it the manufacturer (Maxtor) exaggerating the capacity?

Why does my computer stop working after a while?

I know it is old, but i CAN'T GET A NEW ONE until next year!

I keep formating it.
WHAT DOES IT NEED?

Yesterday it was working well and yesterday i successfully downloaded Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Today i turned it on it had an error so i tryed repairing it but it didn't work so i formatted it.

So i am asking you people to help me. I am only 12 years old.

Answers that will be reported:

1. Throw it and buy a new computer.
2. Silly answers / I don't know
3. Just keep formating it until you get a new computer.
4. Don't download anything on it.

I am connecting a new Lexmark printer/scanner/copier with a usb cable I already had from an HP deskjet (which was just a basic printer.) The cable fits - but my question is if it fits does that mean it works? Or do these cables have other not so obvious criteria that will keep them from working for different kind of printer even tho the connections seem to fit OK? Having trouble installing and wondering whether this may be the problem or should I look elswhere.

I've built from the ground up twice. Every time somthing goes wrong we spend like 3 weeks figuring out if it's overheating, crappy wiring, faulty parts, updating drivers, reading manuals, phone conversations with 4 different manufacturers. Waiting for new parts to come in the mail.

It gets pretty tiring. I figure with the hours put in building and repairing, I might be losing money. Especially with software costs ... oy veh.

Any tips? or anyone in the same boat?

1. Shutdown OS.
2. Remove current device.
3. Install new device using same slot and cables.
4. Go into BIOS and make appropriate change.
5. Boot up.
6. Install new device driver.

Is this right? Is there anything more I should know about?

I have a 2002 Dell Computer with an 80GB Maxim hard drive that is hooked up conventionally (with the flat serial cord). Can I hook this up to get data from it via USB, and if so how do I convert the flat cord to USB output. I am a novice computer guy, but have to get some pictures out of this machine.
Thanks!

The PC stays on for about 15-20 minutes and then gets powered off as if somebody switched off the UPS. Then I have to switch off teh UPS and wait for 2 minutes before powering it back on. The time period that the PC stays on for keeps decreasing as you keep using it further.
What could the problem be?

I recently picked up a new power supply which takes up one of the 3-pin power connectors on my motherboard. This leaves me one short for one of my case fans. Is there any negative effect in using a y-splitter and simply plugging two cables into one 3-pin output? (not necessarily the one leading to my psu, i have others in use as well)
