Most USB devices are plug and play. But maybe your hard drive requires a driver. Go to the manufacturers website and download the latest drivers. If this does not work, take the drive back to your vendor. He will be able to solve your problem.

Go onto google, and type in the brand and model of your device plus driver. This will probably give you some results. usually, it'll require to download a driver.

I'd consult with the vendor who sold you the device. It should be plug and play, but you may need to install device drivers.
