I am connecting a new Lexmark printer/scanner/copier with a usb cable I already had from an HP deskjet (which was just a basic printer.) The cable fits - but my question is if it fits does that mean it works? Or do these cables have other not so obvious criteria that will keep them from working for different kind of printer even tho the connections seem to fit OK? Having trouble installing and wondering whether this may be the problem or should I look elswhere.

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. Which means it is universal and can be used for more than one type of printer. My suggestion would be to un-install the old HP deskjet software, reboot your computer, after it comes back up, install the software that came with your new printer, and then connect your new printer to your computer.

Look elsewhere. Almost all - except a few - printers have the same usb plug thingy. It might be that you have not installed the printer software or
Uninstall the software
Then unplug the printer
Then reinstall the software without the printer being plugged in
Then when the installation is complete plug the printer back and it should work.

Sure, you can buy a USB to Ethernet pretty much anywhere. But they will not work in the manner you are speaking. It is not simply a cable that converts the wires. The USB to Ethernet adapter is a network to USB-A connector, the modem has a USB-B connector on it. Plus it requires software drivers to be installed for the adapter to work, you cannot install 3rd-party software onto a router. What you should do is call up the company that you got the modem from and ask for a different model, one with an Ethernet port on it.

No, it's not the cable. Best to uninstall any printers, then install directly from the install cd. Don't go to printers and choose "add printers". It's best to bypass Windows doing the install and just doing install from cd. Then once that is done, the printer should install properly.

Cable is not the problem.

If software partially installed, try to uninstall it (with printer NOT connected)

Reinstall software from CD, and ONLY connect the printer WHEN told to by the driver installer.

Many devices CAN take drivers after connection, but it's ALWAYS better to load the driver BEFORE connecting a USB device.

Generally speaking, a USB cable is a USB cable. I can switch mine between a printer and a Modem. What type of installation problem are you having?

Often Lexmark's don't want to play well when other printers are installed on your computer, so it's a good idea to uninstall any other printers before trying to install the Lexmark.

Be sure the cable connectors have been pushed all the way in. The cable can work with all printers as long as the connectors matched.
