Is leaving my computer on most of the time a good idea? Will it last longer if I turn it off for several hours a day?

Your Battery will DIE first. Maybe 3 years if you are lucky.

You WILL NEED more RAM. You see, with an increasing number of viruses and other threats, your Anti-virus solution will need MORE RAM.

You see, when they first started shipping Windows 98, just 32MB was enough.. today, Windows 98 needs 128MB to run well. When Windows XP first came out, it came with just 128MB, but today, you should have 512MB. So if you have Windows Vista with just 512MB; you WILL NEED 2GB. It is a simple matter of MULTIPLY BY FOUR.

If you DROP a laptop from just a few feet, the Screen Breaks. If you place your laptop on the front seat of the car next to you; then STOP FAST and it falls to the FLOOR, the Screen Breaks.

Here's the thing. For long battery life, REMOVE IT so it does not stay warm. HEAT is the Battery KILLER.

While most problems are software related, hardware does fail. The way that I see it, something breaks on a laptop within 5 years; but also gets obsolete. It is just too hard to upgrade anything in a laptop, except RAM. It is rare to see a 10 year old laptop.

A desktop is a superior choice. Lower cost, more reliable hardware, more easily upgraded and lasts longer. Let's say 7 years is good for a desktop. But I have seen 15 year old desktops that still run. HEY, they are running DOS, but still work.

A good laptop costs $1,000 and lasts 5 years. That's $200 per year. A good desktop costs $700 and lasts 7 years. That's just $100 per year.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Leaving a laptop on is not a great idea, they're not designed to be used for long periods as they're in such a small box and get hot.

If you use a laptop roughly, bouncing it around and dropping it then your hard disk will probably fail first, either that or the hinges/screen if you treat it very roughly.

With normal use the battery will go first - they last 3-5 years. It's not instant, but the time you can use your laptop on battery power will go down and down over time.

Seriously speaking, without dropping it, the first that would fail would be the hinges. Next, will be the internal fan. Then, would be the CD/DVD drive and lastly, the battery.

I've gone through so many laptops from the early Acer i386, Compaq 486 up to todays Lenovo brands and these are the common parts that regularly fail.
