Here are some of the X2 maximum case temp limits in °C:
S 939 Manchester and Toledo core= 65
AM2 Windsor= 70-72 except X2 6000+ = 63
AM2 Brisbane= 72
AM2 Brisbane X2 BE= 78

Potential damage occurs above those limits. BUT there are safeguards in most motherboards:
1. Auto shutdown when no cpu fan rpm is detected or if rpm slows down to a certain level
2. Auto shutdown when cpu temperature reaches a limit. The limit can usually be adjusted in BIOS
3. CPU throttling down when overheating to reduce heat generation. Some motherboards generate repeating high and low beeps to alarm user that cpu is overheating.
