Intel dual cores:
Pentium D = old tech, high wattage, HOT
Core Duo (Yonah2) = 32bit only mobile processor
Core2 Duo (Conroe, Allendale)= 64bit, new tech, hi-performance at moderate Ghz, low to moderate wattage
AMD dual cores:
Turion X2 = for laptops
Athlon64 X2=for desktops
Core 2 Duo is the best. AMD Athlon64 X2 are priced attractively. Here's performance comparison with AMD X2 6000+

It depends on what kind of programs you run and whether or not they can take advantage of multi-core processors. With some programs you can get twice the processing power from a dual core processor, and 4 times from a quad core. Not all programs are optimized for this.
