Hardware - July 2007

A friend of mine says his back up last 10 hours and he paid $400. I was looking online and the $400 APC power protection back-up unit’s state that they last for 15 mins or so in that price range. Am I missing something? I would like at least a couple of hours of protection in case or a power outage. Thanks.

how do i re install sound on my notebook computer , i dont know what happen to the volume last week my computer was running real slow and my brother in law cleaned out my computer but after he got done cleaning the computer the sound and volume were not on the bottom no more by the time. how do i get my sound and volume back , thanks

i have a gateway laptop and it has the original numbers at the top across below the F1,F2,F3, keys but there are other number keys set up just like the keypad on an original computer, ive tried using the keys by clicking ctrl, alt, shift and others to get these number keys to work but they havent, does anyone know how to get these keys to work, they are the numbers printed in blue showing up to the side on the letter keys.
can anyone help me out, i would rather use those numbers instead of the others.

hooking up my computer to my tv using 15ft s-video i noticed horizontal blocks goign up my tv or watching the signal go up the tv...so i put the computer directly to the tv; crystal clear, put the computer back at my desk and got a 15ft svga cable...problems back!!!! would a 15 ft uxga cable clear up my problem? i thought i was some-what computer savy untill i started messing with the cables.........somebody..help me solve this problem, please

I've tried calibrating my monitor's colors and choosing one color profile after another but still too much of a difference. So when I preview my CMYK files they look weird. The whites are brown. Should I reset my white point? How can I fix this?

I'm stuck between getting a laptop for college which is coming up soon. I'm going to major in electronic media (video editing) so I'm stuck between these two. The Macbook with 1 GB of RAM and 120 GB of hard drive, although I'm adding an extra gig of RAM and the Final Cut Express program. Or the Toshiba Satillite, with 2 GB of RAM and 200 GB of hard drive. The Macbook is an extra 500, so it's 1,500. While the Satillite is 1,000. I'm worried that if I change my major I'll have a Macbook with all this video editing software for nothing. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I am a student of geography so I may be running some GIS programs. I will be doing all my personal photography throught the computer, as well a playing a few games. I will be doing word processing, excell apps, and other student/business style activities.
