I am a student of geography so I may be running some GIS programs. I will be doing all my personal photography throught the computer, as well a playing a few games. I will be doing word processing, excell apps, and other student/business style activities. I am leaning towards a dell because of the student discount through the university, but a bit nervous about first gen Vista.

You should only invest in a laptop if you absolutely require portability. Laptop computers inherently have more problems than desktop computers and cost more fore less.

Since you require GIS and are into photograhy, you will want to invest in a system with max supported and usable RAM (many computers will support more RAM than they can utilize efficiently - do some resaerch on different models).

Get a system which supports SATA hard drives and get the two of the larges you can afford.

Get a upper mid range video card - do not depend the on board video for GIS.

As a previous answer stated, you can order the computer with XP (Pro, Media Centre, or Home)

Godd Luck and study hard.

Every desktop computer manufacturer uses the same internal components so the important thing is to find out who has the best support.

I hold about 15 Microsoft certifications, including Vista, and a Masters degree. I have been using Vista for a long time and it works fine. It's problem is that older software will not work on it, but there are work arounds in many cases.

Microsoft computers use the Intel processor chip or it's equivalent AMD chip. Mac computers use the Intel processor chip too. So this should not be an issue.

Invest more money into the laptop so it will last you longer through your college career. You mentioned you will be doing photography as well as geography programs and a few games. So I recommend something in the upper tier of laptops. It might cost you a bit but trust me, it will keep you from buying another laptop for a longer time.
