The router (through its WAN port) plugs to the cable modem. You also need to initially plug your laptop to the wireless router (on one of the LAN ports) so that you could configure the router. This might be of help:

You could experiment adjusting the router's power level and its position for best reception. A concrete wall may block signal but it could also serve as a reflector. My PC at the second floor gets very good signal even if the router power level is just at medium setting.

A 2.4Ghz cordless phone located between the router and your laptop may cause considerable interference.

No you don't need to install the ISP program on your laptop. Plug the comcast modem into the "WLAN" port on your wireless router when you get it. The router should default to a setup that will work right out of the box.

Set your laptop up to dhcp (automatically obtain IP address) and you should be good to go in most rooms of your house.

The router will plug into your cable modem with the cat5 network cable that is currently plugged into the network card in your computer. If I remember correctly, you will either have to call Comcast and tell them you are going to use a router or turn off the NAT on your router. You won't need to install the ISP program on your laptop as most routers have the capability to stay logged on indefinitely.

Plug the ethernet connection from cable modem to your wireless router WAN port. If you have home pc, connect ethernet port of your home pc to the wiress less router LAN port. You then have to configure the wireless router (set up ssid, NAT etc) from your home pc through a default standard ip usually (192.168.0.1), it could vary. Dont use the default SSID and password. Also enable mac miltering on the wiresless router. Enable DHCP on your laptop. All instructions will be in the wireless router user manual. Good luck.
