Jake is a bit off on what he said...
Pentium D was along the first lines of Pentiums first dual core processor...
Imagine there is a processor in your computer, lets say it runs at 1.0ghz
The dual core version, still runs at 1.0ghz, but instead of 1processor its 2, which allows your computer to do multiple things a lot more quickly because when one CORE gets full, the other one can be used...
The Intel Core 2 Duo came out later on, it features a differnt type of chip, and is using 65nm technology. Which in lames terms, it uses a LOT less ENERGY and yet it RUNS faster... because they've made its components smaller and faster.
Pentium D is not as good as Core 2 Duo.
And Core 2 Duo isnt only for laptops, you can get either or for desktops or laptops.
