Hardware - March 2007

It hasn't worked for a while and I have no idea why. The computer reads it when I insert it into any USB port --- the device lights up, the system tray tells me I have a USB Massive Storage Device installed, it appears as Drive E on My Computer, yet I can't open it up or even format it (it worked in the past, although not very well). It is a plug n' play and I have XP, so it can't be a driver issue. Even if I go to the Properties page and try to scan for errors, nothing happens. Windows Troubleshooting doesn't work either. As you can see, I have no idea what else I can do....help!

OK so i bought vista and installed and it worked great until i went to play counter strike source. My frame rate went from 100+on XP to below 25 on Vista. Is my current hardware the problem or is it something else, i have p4 prescott, 1.5gb ram, ati all in wonder x1800xl pci-e 256, dvd burner, 80gb hdd, 320gb hdd. Is this normal for this type of hardware or is the problem somewhere else?? I got a 4.2 on the user thing in Vista dont know if thats any help. iIm pretty sure i have the latest drivers any help will be greatly appreciated

So I compressed files on my computer to open up hard drive space and afterwards all my internet favorites were gone aside from the ones I had used in the past few days. I tried restoring the system, but that didn't help.

Also, I'm working on a Windows XP and the other user accounts didn't get their favorites deleted...only mine. Is there any other way, aside from restoring that could get my favorites back?

Hi i downloded a viedo torrent. I finally finished downloading it and put all (52) file things in VLC to watch it but it keeps saying there is somthing wrong and only plays like 47 seconds of it. Is there anything i can do do fix this PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Next month i'm going to buy a new laptop.

should i buy a lap top with Windows Vista? or should i get one with windows XP?

pleas help me out. i hear that some programs don't work with WinVista. I'm into web Design so i don't want to get a laptop with WinVista and find out that the programs don't work at all.

also i have an MP3 player, Cell phone, multicard reader.
do you guys think it will work with out any problums?

should i stick to Windows XP and Up grade later with Windows Vista?

ok i have a Gigabyte 945GM-S2 motherboard and there is no connector to allow for a fire wire nor do i have room to put a pci card with firewire as my video card and nic card have taken up all the room...the case has a firewire port but again since the board does not support it does me no good ..can someone please help and a usb adapter for the firewire does not work with my video camera.. thanks so much Michael

i just bought a new motherboard to support my video card, and a stick of ddr ram, but when i start up my computer, it takes about 15 trys to boot. My guess is the power supply, ill try booting up my computer and i get nothing on the monitor, but after 15 tries, the monitor and cpu boots up. is it the power supply? My motherboard manual doesnt state the minimum power supply power. I have 480w powers supply to meet the needs of my video card (minimum 300w). My guess is that theres to much watts on the 480w power supply for the motherboard i have. But why would my cpu boot though?

I have an nVidia 680i motherboard with pretty good cooling... the CPU usually hangs below 40C which I thought was pretty safe. My question is: How do I go ahead and overclock? How safe is it? After I do the overclock, how hot is too hot? And this is reversable right? If I need software, what do you recommend? Thanks a lot.

Is there any truth to this?

Can doing this all the time ever harm something or corrupt the hard drive? It takes too long waiting for it to reboot the proper way.

Hi for some reason my new pc isn't working with my moniter, installed xp no probs...get the blue screen w/green boxes ect...then it cuts out...does work in safe mode however...it is an older moniter a (optiquest q71) anyone have any ideas why this is happening ?
