Is there any truth to this?

Can doing this all the time ever harm something or corrupt the hard drive? It takes too long waiting for it to reboot the proper way.

If you do it all the time, its bad, and you are shutting it down improperly. Shut it down normally no matter how long it takes. Only use this method when you computer is frozen and is not responding. If it really takes that long, I think you should take it to see your local computer repair guy or get a new one.

When you cut power, you run the risk of corrupting an application that was running. If a file was being written to it could also be corrupted.
