I'd first talk with the vendor. If they only sell Windows Vista with the new laptop, then this discussion is rather redundant.
What you want is to assk if they will sell you the Laptop with Windows XP on it and give you the voucher for the free Windows Vista upgrade. This should be the optimal solution for you.
You are correct in stating that not all programs work well with Windows Vista currently. It would be prudent checking on the Microsoft website (or the product websites) if your programs are compatible with Vista.

Right now, it is true that a lot of programs aren't working with Vista, but in the future everything will. I'm sure those companies are working very hard to create patches to make their software work with Vista. Soon or later, they will have it.
Vista is great, it has a lot of cool functions/features, however it's a little bit different and hard to use since it's very new. But I'm sure you will get a hang of it after a while. This happened before when Windows 2000 came out and everybody migrated to Win2000. They get confused because things are different with Win98.
So, if you want, you can always buy laptop with XP first, then upgrade it later to Vista. Make sure that the laptop that you are buying is Vista Ready and has all the Vista drivers ready on its manufacturer's website.

Bah the problem is that most laptops today are shipping out with Vista pre-installed. I think a few companies online will ship their notebooks with XP installed with a free Vista upgrade... I would stick with XP for at least another year because there're some compatibility issues... a lot actually. IMO, XP gets the job done so well and Vista seems like it's just there for flair and to compete with Mac OS X, which is a P.O.S. OS in my opinion. Why would any rational person want all this superfluous junk hogging up their system's resources? My desktop FLIES with XP pro x64 edition. I would suggest XP.

Hi, From my point of view, I still prefer to stick with Windows XP.
Reason: Window Vista does not support quite a number of program. Example - For some who are using old printer or scanner will have problem when they install the driver in vista environment. Also i find that window vista is actually a graphic intensive. It eat alot of memory and slows down the system.
Therefore, I still prefer XP as Vista is still in the early stage.
Cheers

Vista is still unproven as far as I am concerend plus there is alot of programs that will not run with vista. I would stick with XP it is a proven OS that will not suprise you like vista might. I also here ther are some security concerns with vista. It is eather ON or OFF no middle ground. That is good and Bad, if you want to have to give permission for every funtion you want to do then vista will be great for you. I have a feeling that Vista will be the next ME.

Right now, i recommend you to stay with xp (or get a better pc BUT with xp) a lot of Web Design apps wont work fine on Vista. Like Adobe Products (http://bitelia.com/2007/03/21/windows-vista-y-adobe-no-se-llevan-bien/) sorry the link is in spanish.
By the way, i have vista and i have to tell yo that every darn time you unconnect and connect something with 24 hours in the meantime your pc will have to download the drivers again. Its a pain in the butt, and of course, the drivers on the cd's of your stuff probably wont work with vista as they were made to work with XP (Vista didnt focus on backwards compatibility)

Don't let the pre-installed OS be your deciding factor in buying a laptop!!!
XP or Vista, you will be in good shape. Although under the hood they are different and you can turn Aero off in Vista functionally they are going to be about the same.
I run them both and different versions.
