Your cheapest option is to build it yourself. You will get more for the money. Helpful links below.

P.S. Laptops are not good for gaming.

You'd be looking at a $600-800 machine.
Specifically it needs
1. Nvidia 6400 Geforce go or better video card (ATI x1600 or X700/800 is fine also, x1300 is borderline performance)...this is the most important part of your system
2. 512 megabytes or more of DDR2 RAM
3. CPU type doesn't matter so much...either Athlon 64 or Intel Core Duo (or Core 2 Duo) are the best if you can find them cheaply. if possible away from Pentium M or Celeron processors. But remember, the video card is MANY times as important as the processor type.

Not getting a DVD-RW drive or large hard disk will help you keep the price down (IDE is fine also...you don't need the more expensive SATA hard disk technology).

Used Dell computers (IE thos on ebay, for example) often carry the lowest prices...Gateways are also cheap but often have terrible video cards (which kill their gaming capabilities).

AS A RESPONSE TO ALL THE RECOMMENDATION ABOUT BUILDING A NOTEBOOK FROM INDIVIDUAL PARTS you have to remember SINCE THE PARTS OFTEN AREN'T MASS PRODUCED ON THE SAME SCALE AS PORTABLE PCs YOU, IN FACT, OFTEN DON'T GET A BETTER PRICE BY BUYING THEM THIS WAY (this is the opposite of desktop PC's). This is, another words, an effect of economies of scale.

Building your own is the best way to get the most out your money. That way you can spend on the important things like the video card, cpu, and ram.
