I have an nVidia 680i motherboard with pretty good cooling... the CPU usually hangs below 40C which I thought was pretty safe. My question is: How do I go ahead and overclock? How safe is it? After I do the overclock, how hot is too hot? And this is reversable right? If I need software, what do you recommend? Thanks a lot.

If you have to ask this question then you aren't ready to overclock.

Also, this wouldn't be the best place to ask OCing questions, I suggest you read and ask all you overclocking questions in a forum such as overclockersclub. Read the pros/cons before you consider going this way.

There's plenty of certified techs here that would be happy to answer and help you out.

Overclocking is an art, it requires a lot of time and monitoring of the system. If you are determined to overclock, I would suggest you do a lot of reading on the subject.
If you overclock just a little to much it can be fatal, and once you start overclocking if like most, your temperature as well as the computer's is likely to rise.
Once you start playing in the BIOS setting, you had best know what you are doing. Memory and CPU voltages are very touchy items. If you just want to do minor overclocking, then stick to memory timings.
