i have made recovery discs and saved all the important stuff. Should i reboot and use the recovery discs to set every thing up again? problem: my notebook is taking forever to start up and sounds are distorted whether its from my windows media player or sounds online. i checked the speakers and the sound settings on wmp, but every thing seems to be running fine. i scanned my computer for viruses and anything else that isn't working properly, but all seems to be working perfectly. i even compressed unused files to free up some space (for memory? not sure but someone told me to try that) and there is plenty of memory and "space." i really don't know what is wrong with my laptop but i know that rebooting and recovering the system shud be a last resort. any suggestions of what is wrong with my HP laptop or what step i shud take next to avoid "imminent failure"?

Ok, I have an hp pavillion dv1000 and I was running Ubuntu (for a C programming class I was taking). Afterwards I wanted to switch back to Windows XP Pro. I used DBAN to wipe the drive clean. Afterwards I booted from the cd drive with the xp disc. Everything loaded and then when it said to press enter to continue with the installation, I got an error saying "setup did not find any hard disk installed". I don't understand this, when I run a Linux live cd I can view and access the hard drive, but the XP disc can't find it. I'm planning on updating to Vista in the next few days anyways but I wanted to know what's going on....and btw does anybody know if the same problem exists with Vista?

I have a lap top computer. After in-activity the computer goes into hybernation. (as per normal). I used to be able to half depress the on button and it would resume. However now it doesn't. I have to continue through with a manual shut down and then a restart with the on off button. Possiblities?

You know, the part of the computer where you can input a wireless card when needed. Is there one integrated? Unless the slot on the right side by front view of the laptop where it holds the HP Mobile Remote Control Express Card is also the PCI slot, then OK.

i recently built a new system and i am pretty sure the cpu is overheating. i installed speedfan which shows me the temp of the cpu, and when running cpu intensive programs, the cpu temp will get up to about 70 degrees C and then the computer auto shuts off. the fan seems to be working fine and i put thermal paste on it when i put the heatsink on. i have installed lots of computers before and never seen this problem.
any ideas?

We are in the market for a new laptop computer that has just the basics but can also store videos and be capable of burning CDs or DVDs and I don't understand all the abbrev. of Rws and such. Our budget can't go to far over $1,000. Any help would be welcome, thanks.

I accidently deleted all of my files from one of my classes off of my USB storage device, is there anyway to recover them. I know alot about computers, but not alot about USB Storage devices. I was moving folders around and accidently deleted the wrong folder. It was full of two months worth of work that is going to be terrible to have to re-do. If you have any ideas please let me know! Thanks!

I need something that will be able to store my pictures so no one can "accidentally" run into them on my shared computer; I have taken lots and lots of pictures and I'm not knowledgeable with computers so what sort of thing would I need?

Since I'm not that bright when it comes it this, I'd appreciate it if someone could tell me exactly what to get...

At first I thought I was supposed to get a flash drive but apparently those are just used to transfer stuff; not store stuff.

We have an older Compaq desktop. the motherboard only supports 512mb ram, and it's too slow for office2003 and Autocad. I'd like to buy a new barebones system, some ram, CPU, and then move my IDE HD, CD/RW and DVD/RW over to it. Already have mouse/kbd/monitor/etc also. Lots of choices on Newegg and other sites, but how to know what to buy that all works together? Nearly anything would be faster than what we have now, don't need a "screamer" and don't even need super powerful graphics. This isn't a gamer system, 'ya know?
I'm no stranger to the insides of a PC, but just need some help buying some componets that will play nicely with each other. Don't care if it's vista compatible either. Win XP home is fine for us, I don't even want to reinstall my OS, it messes with the licensing for Office.
Best answer is a shopping list from newegg or other site with reasons why. Can we keep it under $300? If more, why?

I bought a video card that won't fit in my computer unless I remove the little tabs often used to remove RAM from the slot. I need to remove one of them from all of my RAM slots to get my video card to fit. Is it safe? I DO NOT need to remove the tabs on the other side of the RAM, nor remove the tab on the video card slot. No connector pins are going to be removed.

I do some desktop publishing out of my home. I'd really like to be able to print on my own. I just do flyers, brochures, invitations and other stuff like that. I'd like to get a color laser printer. I'm looking to spend under $500. Any suggestions?

... a new motherboard and graphics card. I use it for gaming and programming. Gaming, of course, is where it is most lacking.

Without further ado, I give you the specs:

The Inexorable
---------------------

Intel P4 2.4C (FSB * 2.5 = 3.0 GHz), 512K
* Abit IS7-E, Intel 865PE, Socket 478
Seagate 80 GB SATA 7,200 8MB
WD 120 GB SATA 7,200 8MB
1GB Ram (256 X 4, 2-6-3-2)
Antec 430W power supply
Dual LCD (19”, 17”)
* ATI 9700 Pro
DVD +/- RW

*needs immediate replacement

In summary, this computer (1) needs a new motherboard, and (2) a new graphics card that can handle two LCD monitors. What mobo / graphics combo would best mesh with the current equipment?
