I bought a video card that won't fit in my computer unless I remove the little tabs often used to remove RAM from the slot. I need to remove one of them from all of my RAM slots to get my video card to fit. Is it safe? I DO NOT need to remove the tabs on the other side of the RAM, nor remove the tab on the video card slot. No connector pins are going to be removed.

The computer is upright, but the tabs I'm removing will be the lower ones. The ram slots are vertical when the computer is upright

Even in both the holding and eject positions the tabs are in the way (due to the large heatsink on the card, no, it's not a 2-slot one)

Strangely enough, most newer high performance AGP cards are built this way. GeForce 7800 and Radeon X1950 (Can you believ they still make AGP versions?) have gigantic heatsinks.

Try this... Ready? If you have EMPTY ram slots on your m/b then you can CLOSE the tabs as if there were chips in them. Having the tabs in the HOLDING position without chips in the slot WILL NOT BOTHER THE MOTHER BOARD. It is not a good idea to pull the tabs off. If you pull the wrong way you might break something else.

If you DO have chips in the RAM Slots then there is something seriously wrong with the video card your installing. The AGP cards are designed to have the program chips on the side of the card AWAY from the RAM. If the card stretches over the RAM Slots, then the card has not been assembled correctly. Return it to the store.

I wouldn't do it. I'm assuming your computer case is generally put upright. Without an ejector tab, which keeps the RAM in place, the RAM may slide out of the socket. The force of the RAM sliding out might cause the other tab to open, and your RAM will fall out. I would just return the video card and buy a new one.

it would be safe to do, but not a good thing to do.
it would really decrease the value of you computer. the tabs just help eject the ram without bending the pins under it, a safty thing.

i wouldnt think it be safe because that is what holds the ram in place. but i guess that the video card may replace it. Honestly i wouldnt do it because what if you move that pc and your ram is half hanging out i think it could get ugly. Just replace the mother board
