if i set my power settings to shut off the hard disk after inactivity will it effect a download in progress?

I have my laptop set to shut down the harddrive after five minutes of inactivity and have no problems downloading files while away from the computer. As long as the system is reading or writing to the harddrive there is activity and the harddrive will not shutdown, as soon and something needs to be written or read off the harddrive it will become active again.

definitely. just turn off the monitor not the hard disk.
