If you currently have a computer tower and are computer savvy, you can upgrade the computer yourself. The cost would be less than $300 for an excellent setup. You can even keep your existing Windows XP, but re installing Windows XP will also improve speed. The advantage of upgrading it yourself would be a brand new $1000 PC for under $300.
If you do not want to replace the parts yourself, or do not have a friend that can do it for you, I would suggest buying a PC from either
Best Buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat01001&type=category&categoryRep=cat01000
Circuit City http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/category.do?catOid=-12962&N=20012961+20012962&c=1
or Comp USA http://www.compusa.com/products/products.asp?N=200005 .
All stores change their prices every Sunday. So on Sunday you get the flyer or go to their website and look for the deals. You can usually find a decent machine for under $500. Go get it that day. The best deals sell out within 1 to 2 days. The advantage would be that you would then have 2 computers. You could always sell the old one on eBay for $50-$100 to recoup part of what you spent on the new one. If you do not know what type of PC to get or with what components, I would reccommend visiting one of the stores and determining what best suites your needs. If you do not do any hardcore video processing, audio processing, or gaming, a $300-$500 computer would suit your needs just fine. Good brands would be Compaq, HP, Toshiba. I would go with an AMD processor. They work harder than a Pentium at a lower cost. A 2GhZ 3200+ or faster. You would want a minimum of 512Mb of RAM DDR or DDR2 PC3200+ 400Mhz. I would reccommend 1Gb of RAM for better performance and speed. Hard drive size is not all that important as hard drives are cheap and easy to add to any computer system. Other features are optional and up to you as a user. You probably already have periphials such as a printer, Web Cam, game controllers, etc.
If you would like to upgrade the PC yourself here is a list of compatible parts for a very reasonable price. The only requirement on your end is that you have an ATX compatible tower. The prices sometimes change, but this is their most current when I checked.
