We are in the market for a new laptop computer that has just the basics but can also store videos and be capable of burning CDs or DVDs and I don't understand all the abbrev. of Rws and such. Our budget can't go to far over $1,000. Any help would be welcome, thanks.

When purchasing a laptop, you want to get as much for your $$ as you possibly can, since laptops aren't really upgrade friendly, as towers are. So get the fastest processor you can,you can upgrade your hard drive and your memory, but that's about it! HP has the best laptops, in my opinion and right now there are many good deals for them. You should be able to get your hands on an awesome laptop with Windows Vista Operating System,512 mb- 1gb of ram, an 80 gb hard drive, Cd-Dvd-r-rw,wireless card and a duo core processor for right around $1000.00 if you shop around! There have been some starting at $549.00 on up, just this week in the HP catalog, as well as at FRY'S Electronics and at BEST BUY, also go to Buy.com. You may even want to consider one with Windows Media Center for your video needs! Happy Shopping!

First, you can get an excellent laptop computer for a budget of $1000.

Second, the brand does not matter much in the grand scheme of things. If you take care of your computer, it will last a long time. Make sure you get a good anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and firewall application and run them.

For your needs, you will need a CD or DVD burner, and a large HD. Get at least a 120GB HD.

I recommend Dell computers. They are reliable and have some of the best deals out there. There are deals for 25% off some laptops at dell and a 20% off $999 laptop coupon at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html

Good Luck.
