Check out CCleaner( http://www.ccleaner.com)

CCleaner is a very good, easy to use, free registry tool, and just all around computer cleaner. As already said doing anything to your registry can have potential problems, but I have used the tool for quite some time with out any problems at all, I generally run the tool after any time I uninstall software. As always make sure you back up any changes you might make to the registry. There is no extra "junk" that comes bundled with this tool. Useless startup items can slow down your computer, this tool has a solutions for it too. It can remove your temp files, it can clear your internet files. I seriously doubt you have this problem since hard drives are so massive these days, but not having enough space open on your hard drive will slow things down too.

There are 4 sections to this program (Cleaner,Issues,Tools, and Options)

The cleaner section will empty your temporary folders, your internet files(including all your cookies so if you have stored passwords you might keep that in mind, but we will cover that in Options) and all the other junk files on your machine.

The Issues section is where you clean your registry, it will present you with the option of backing up changes it will make to the registry. Run though the Issues section untill there are no more Issues, it will generally take no less than 2 times and maby more, do a reboot and run again to make sure everything is gone.

The Tools section lets you uninstall programs, and get rid of unwanted start up items.

The options is pretty selfexplanitory, but in there you can pick which cookies you wish to keep, such as this great sight.

There is a program called BootVis that can tell you every device driver that is loading when windows starts and tells you how long it took for each individual driver to load. You may find that an old device driver for something that may not be in your system anymore is trying to load and has to time out before it can continue.

Click Start, Run, type msconfig, hit ok. On top click the Startup tab and uncheck some of the unnecessary programs starting with XP.
