Hardware - December 2006

Is there a way of finding out how many fans are in my computer.
When i play games the pc makes alot of noise and half an hour after i turn them off the computers temperature is at about 73%.

Should i be worried?

I got a new graphics card recently it's a nvidia 7100 gs i'm not sure if it has a built in fan or not.

Please help!

I have just got a 2nd hand 3m 15" touch screen tft monitor. It had no power suplly so I have trid to use a universal adaptor. It is correct polarity and at 12Volts. The power LED lights up and when you unplug then plug back in the cable to pc you see the screen for a split second. The est of the time the screen is black. Would this be the adaptor or is the monitor broken? Are 3m power supples expensive?

My Alienware computer has a creative XFi soundcard (sorry don't know exact specs). The computer is about 3 months old. For Christmas, I got Bose Companion 5 speakers that connect through a USB.

The Bose people said I don't need the card ( and I could use the audio in jack on the speakers to connect to the card but I will probably lose sound quality)

Alienware said the card is more important and I should return my beautiful speakers.

What's the deal? Should I just sell the soundcard?

I got a laptop for Christmas and bought the Sims 2 Holiday Edition game, but it runs extremely slow. The screen even freezes up when I play the game. My laptop came with 18.6 GB and now has around 12. So I was wondering if a flash drive would help games run faster.

This morning there was a blackout that lasted about 4 hours long, When the power came back, the computer would not turn on.
It worked fine before the black out. The monitor turns on, and I tried to change power cords, and outlets for the computer, I checked the power switch in back, that was on. I did just recently install a new graphics card yesterday, and when I turn on the computer the fans or lights dont turn on. With the exceptions of two green lights in the back of the computer.
I hope this is sufficient information for anybody to point out a problem.

I have a laptop Dell L400 and the old drive died. I also had a bad
partition sector. I just bought a 60 GB HD (Seagate) and put it into
my laptop along with the Windows XP (full version). I configured the
BIOS so it boots from the CD drive. I can hear it spinning my external
CD-ROM drive, but my screen just shows a blinking cursor.

When I boot from the HD it predictably says no operating system.

What should I do ?

I have a Radeon 9800 xt. Is it my video card? It drives me insane. The only time it blinks is if I'm playing a video game like WoW or something. Anyway to make it stop?

My laptop is about a year old, and one by one, the USB sockets have stopped working... I think that the wiring inside has come loose, basically, if they are wiggled up and down to much they stop working, as if a wire has a been pulled out.

Is this a common problem, and is it easy to repair?

I have an Emachines desktop currently with a 3
button wheel mouse. Friend gave me a Dell 3 button optical USB. Can I just unplug the old and

i am going to be buying a mobo with 8gb max capacity and would like to buy a gb memory stick ddr2 for now. what kind of ddr2 should i buy. i think speedwise i should go high as possible but is there any other considerations. also what are good brand names. other then kingston, and corsair
