Hardware - November 2006

I have no idea what is wrong with my computer. Sometimes it will run all day, other times it will run for 10 minutes. I will be in the middle of something, internet, publisher, a game, and it will just freeze completely. The only thing I can do then is shut it off at the tower and then turn it back on. This pc has worked like a charm for 3 years and now all of a sudden it acts like a piece of junk! What is wrong?!?

My husband and I have a running battle over whether to turn off the computer when I'm not using it or not. He says that it takes as much electricity as a 300-watt bulb to run. He wants me to turn it off every time I am not using it RIGHT THEN. He said he asked a computer person and they told him it was very expensive to leave it on. I just find that hard to believe. HELP!!!!!

My laptop is a few years old, and it's running really slow and I can't put any new programs in it because I don't have the space. The computer sales guy I talked to asked me do I want more hard drive space or more RAM? I don't even know what RAM is, so what do I tell him?

I have two computers so far that the CD rom with open and shut over and over, to the point it has to be disconneted. Is this just an unlucky thing getting two defected Roms or is there something causing it?

I got a brand new laptop (HP Pavilion zd8000) about 1 1/2 years ago, and fully charged the battery the first time like they said. Since then, I've kept the laptop plugged in nearly all the time. Usually, I'm able to disconnect it for brief periods of time to do things like prints something out in the other room, etc. Now I unplug the laptop for about 30 seconds and the battery dies. Is there anything I can do to make it hold a charge again?

ok .. i've run a laptop monitor as my primary monitor and a dell monitor as the second for awhile now. Woke up this morning and their identity is reversed. The checkbox in display properties to "use this device as the primary monitor" is greyed out for both monitors. How can i switch the laptop back to my primary monitor?

I only have one output slot in my computer. I have 2 HP speakers, one subwoofer, and two additional speakers. How do i get all these speakers to work? I can connect the subwoofer to the HP speakers, and the two additional speakers to the subwoofer, but sound only comes out in the two HP speakers. Everything is in good condition and is not broken.

I have a emachines tower (400ix). I am upgrading from a celeron 500mhz to a celeron 1.1 ghz. I put it in and it turns on for about 5 seconds and goes off. Yes I have a heatsink and have put thermal compound between the thing in the center of the processor and it. The heat can't be the problem because when it goes off i unplug it and feel the processor and it is cool. Is it the jumpers and if so, where are the ones i need to set? cant find any except the ones labeled for other things. (Note: the system works withe the 500mhz.)

I really need help figuring out what kind of grapic card to buy, that is compatible with this motherboard. The only thing I know is that it is APG 8x.
