I have a emachines tower (400ix). I am upgrading from a celeron 500mhz to a celeron 1.1 ghz. I put it in and it turns on for about 5 seconds and goes off. Yes I have a heatsink and have put thermal compound between the thing in the center of the processor and it. The heat can't be the problem because when it goes off i unplug it and feel the processor and it is cool. Is it the jumpers and if so, where are the ones i need to set? cant find any except the ones labeled for other things. (Note: the system works withe the 500mhz.)

It could be that your motherboard can NOT accept that big of a processor. the MB does have a limit for a front side bus as well as how big the processor it can be (when I say big, I mean in Mhz or Ghz). Your board my not be able to take it and it shuts off due to excissive power draw. It is also possible that you put too much thermal compound on the processor. Too much WILL counteract the purpose of the compound and cause heat. Also you could be mounting the heat sink wrong causing in apropreate heat transfer.

the problem is simple the motherboard cant handle a 1.1 ghz. you're gonna have to check the max possessor speed on the motherboard. i would go with a 800mhz celeron that should work. just return the 1.1ghz one.
good luck!
