ok .. i've run a laptop monitor as my primary monitor and a dell monitor as the second for awhile now. Woke up this morning and their identity is reversed. The checkbox in display properties to "use this device as the primary monitor" is greyed out for both monitors. How can i switch the laptop back to my primary monitor?

Goto the display and click on 1 or 2 and say make this my primary monitor. It the last tab I think it should be advance tab. This should take it back and forth... If you are running Media XP...

Hi. Obviously you have a dual output video card. Does it have a control panel? If so you can probably switch back from there. Funny that it just happened though.
