I have an external usb disk which is being recognized by winxp, but I can't access its content. Any idea on how to solve this problem whitout re-formating the disk?

Computer: Dell Inspiron 400 1GHz, 40GB HDD, 512MB RAM.
Operating System: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2.
Earlier my Computer was not taking this much time.. It all happened after I had to format it due to some problem which probably occured due to some virus that came through Net.. Actually I am not sure about this.

excluding SATA, are all IDE types compatible with each other? For instance, I have a ATA 100 hdd, will it work with any motherboard that has IDE on it? I have the ATA cable and will it work with UDMA??

I have a 1 woman small business..I have always purchased all-in-1s. However, it seems like I'm always having to by a new one because 1 of the features goes bad. For instance, the one I have now keeps having a "scanner failure" error and it's getting worse...used to happen once a week, now it's everyday...so once a again I'm having to buy another one. Is it wise to buy a printer/copier/scanner and a fax machine separate? Or an all-in-1...??? I've had my business 8 years and have been through about 4 printers.
