Depends on your needs. For graphics and speed you will not beat a MAC. For compatibility and for serviceability a PC. By the way, there are absolutely no viruses that can get into a MAC. They are not written for MAC.

As with everything tech there isnt clear answers as to which is the best. You've gotta search out whats best for your needs. But i'll give you my personal preferences. I'd get a toshiba for a midrange laptop and a Fujitsu or Sony for toprange. Of coz Mac does make pretty niftty laptops. But Toshiba makes laptops equavalent to the strength of IBM in terms of components. However IBM is now made in china and well i cant really be sure of the quality.
Few things to ask when you buy a laptop
1. What chip...avoid celeron chips if u need speed. Take the intel dua core or Centrino. Intel pentium 4 is pretty good but tends to drain power off the battery's faster than the earlier mentioned chips.
2. How much RAM? You'll wanna get at least 512mb RAM to run modern programs without having to wait too long. But if its juz for word processing 256 would do.
3. Graphics card. Does the laptop come with one? Do you play games? If so then you might wanna get a graphics card with about 256mb RAM.
4. What the weight of the laptop. If you want high mobility u might wanna get a lighter one. But lighter does not mean better. Toshiba's can sometimes be on the heavier side but are extremely robusts.
5. Whats the Harddisk space. Getting an 80GB to 120GB should be cool for most ppl. I cant really give u a proper estimate of what you need due to lack of specific of what u want. If you have the money try getting a laptop which runs a SATA harddisk. Thats a faster harddisk, runs at 7200rpm as opposed to the 5400rpm normal harddisks.
6. DVD burner. If you want to burn DVD make sure you laptop has one.
7. You might also wanna check for warranty and all that jazz.
These are the basics. Lots more like how many usb ports and stuff like that i haven't covered here. But also another reason to go with a windows based system is coz its easier to run most programs. However if ur in the USofA then its pretty easy finding mac based programs so then its not much difference. However in Asia the windows based systems rule.

If you ever used a Mac, you wouldn't have to ask. I have used a variety of pcs in the workplace and there is simply no comparison. Macs never freeze, never crash; OS-X is Linux-based and stable as the Rock of Gibraltar. They are incredibly user-friendly compared to Microsoft products. Everything you need is always at your fingertips. If you need to add more memory or whatever, you can easily get under the hood. Best of all, Macs are virus-proof and spyware-proof. Download Firefox as your browser and say goodbye to popups too.
Sure they're more expensive, for a reason. You get what you pay for. Friends with pcs are always calling me to bail them out from some problem, and often I have to refer them to the techie because the problem defeats me. I think in the long run you spend for repairs or virus removal on a pc, the purchase price difference for a Mac. Not to mention the aggravation.
So there you have it - the perspective of someone who uses both regularly. I have both a Mac desktop and laptop at home. I wouldn't take a pc as a gift!
