The 2 software technologies that allow video cards to work with computer games and multimedia are Open GL and Direct X. When Voodoo cards were still around they used a third one called 3dfx Glide, but that is obsolete now. All the mainstream video cards support both Direct X and Open GL. Most games run with Direct X, but some, like Doom 3, are made to work with Open GL. Open GL is supposed to have more sophisticated shading and shadows, which makes the game more realistic. If you go to your video card's console program there is a tab that lets you adjust settings for Direct X or Open GL. Don't play with these settings, but if you look there you will know it supports OpenGL.

Almost all Motherboards/Graphics cards that have been made in the past 10 years should be Open GL Compatable
