When you ask a question, it costs you 5 points.
When you answer a question, you're awarded 2 points.
Yahoo keeps the 3 point profit. So far, they've amassed billions of points, and their financial future has never been brighter.
To service community conscience, Yahoo also doles out a 10 point bonus to 'best answers'. Considering that some questions get 50 or more answers (250 point income), the expenditure for public relations is well spent.
Now you know.

Points and Levels
To encourage participation and reward great answers, Yahoo! Answers has a system of points and levels. The number of points you get depends on the specific action you take. The points table below summarizes the point values for different actions. While you can't use points to buy or redeem anything, they do allow everyone to recognize how active and helpful you've been. (And they give you another excuse to brag to your friends.)

Levels are another way to keep track of how active you (and others) have been. The more points you accumulate, the higher your level. Yahoo! Answers recognizes your level achievements with our special brand of thank you's!
And finally, as you attain higher levels, you'll also be able to contribute more to Yahoo! Answers - you can ask, answer, vote and rate more frequently.

there is not point, except bragging rights, it is a game, like anyother, it is something basically to do if you are bored and you want to entertain you brain, or very often in some cases enjoy a good laugh.
think about it this way, when you play jeopardy at home and count your money you could have one if you were really on the show, you can pretend you have it, but in reality, it is only numbers to show us how really bored and preoccupied as a society we have become to have the most of anything

The points only have the value that you give to them. They were created by some some designer for reasons only s/he knows.

Points are the highest parts of carefully structured cone-heads.
Also, the more points you get, the more ads you can be assumed to have looked at.

because...u answered the question.
they just did the points thing for fun...but it's not like we're really gonna win anything if we have the most points.
so, it's actually like yahoo! answers is a game.
...it's just for fun though.

You don't win anything. It is just Yahoo!'s way of making you get carpel tunnel syndrome sooner.
