excluding SATA, are all IDE types compatible with each other? For instance, I have a ATA 100 hdd, will it work with any motherboard that has IDE on it? I have the ATA cable and will it work with UDMA??
THanks!!

In general the Parallel IDE types are compatible with your motherboard. It's a question if the Drives size will be recognized by your BIOS. Windows 98 maxes out pretty early in the game. Windows 2000 maxes out at about 138GB, but a patch can extend it.

Even on older motherboards it will still work. But, if the motherboard only supports ATA 33 or ATA 66, that is the mode the hard drive will run. (DMA Mode 2 or Mode 4)

Yes, just software/CMOS issues, my old P2B can handle a new IDE hardware but I need to Flash it with a Beta last b4-obsolete BIOS update to use a 40 GB device.

It will work. It might gripe about not have an 80 pin cable, but it will still work. (it will work faster if you give it what it wants, of course)

Keep in mind that an older BIOS may not support today's larger hard drives.
