I think this topic may get the Intel and AMD fanboys going ;).
AMD used to be the choice to go with. Now with Intel's Core 2 Duo chips out...they're more powerful/efficient. I'd say if you want to shell out money for the best processor go with Intel. But if you want a chip that is cheap (since AMD slashed their prices to compete with Intel...lucky us ;) )and performs up to par with current software go with AMD.

At the moment Core 2 Extreme is the most powerful processor available.

But between Athlon and Core Duo, Athlon.

*Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, and Core 2 Extreme are all different.

I assume you mean Core 2 Duo (C2D), the desktop chip. C2D is faster and offers more performance per dollar and more performance per watt (meaning it runs cool and quiet and uses less energy). These are harder to come by due to limited availability, however, and retailers often jack up the price. You can find Athlons for cheaper ($152 for Athlon X2 3800+) and retailers have plenty, so you can sometimes get even better deals on them.

davidu, many games that have been made in the past 6 months that have utilized both cores on a processor for physics calculations and such, and the list is growing rapidly. Single-core will soon be obsolete with the coming quad-core processors and more frequent use of multi-threaded applications.

Athlon FX dual core are the best. The chip design for the athlon dual cores are better than the intel, because the memory controller is on the chip, and the intel's is not. Also, the bus speed on Athlon is faster.

for a laptop...it would depend on what you want to use it for...if its for gaming...then athlon would be the best...it would also be affordable too...i would say athlon would be the best processor to get now because they also have duo core...for laptops...its the turion 64 x2...oh...forgot to mention...the turion 64 x2 is a 64 bit processor...unlike the intel duo core which is only a 32 bit processor...64 bit duo core is probably going to be the future for processor...at least for now...intel doesnt have a duoc core 64 bit processor for notebooks yet but i heard its suppose to be coming out in a few weeks or months...duo core might be faster but in tests...athlon processor are proven to process more...so in the long run...more is better than faster in a way right???

If you're gaming, go with the Athlon. No one seems to be making games that really take advantage of dual core processors yet.

AMD athlon processors are better because they do not have to work as hard because they are more powerful so your battery will last longer.
