Im already cracking WEP keys thanks to the many tutorials everywhere...

But as a nooob, im missing the basic stuff.
Im trying to configure the card manually, because i set my router to not be a DHCP server.

These commands are the ones im using, but i cant get connected to the internet. I can ping my router though...

ifconfig ath0 192.168.2.5 (that sets the ip fine)

iwconfig ath0 key XXXXXX (my wep key)
iwconfig ath0 channel 6 (sets the card to channel 6 like my AP)
route add default gw 192.168.2.1 ath0 (adds the default gateway)
ifconfig ath0 up (brings up the interface?)

and i also tried

echo nameserver 192.168.2.1 >> /etc/resolve.conf

I dont know what else i need. because all this will not get me connected to the internet.

If i use DHCP, i can get connected without problems... but i need to keep things manual in this case.

Any clue?

Thanks a lot.

Hey... I am trying to configure my dad's home office for him but i'm no IT pro. We have an old style HP Laserjet 3330 with a parallel port.

We have one stand alone PC which is connected to the printer at present, and two laptops (one PC one MAC). Ideally we would connect both but the PC is the main one we want to print wirelessly from.

I understand that in order to network the printer we need to get a jet direct card ... that will connect the parallel port to a USB connection (or ethernet?) so I can connect the printer to the router?

Does this mean I need to have a server installed?

Complete dummy here.

Is this correct? Can anyone advise?

Thanks!!!!

My children are on Myspace a lot, and i try to discourage them from doing so. I don't want them to know i'm checking it because then they would not talk to those that they do, i want to see what they say and do so that if they were to talk to this person i'd be able to punish them from doing it, otherwise they could find another secret way to talk to online predators, i hardly know whats going on on their myspace/other accounts. Any programs i can use over my home network to check? Thank you so much.

I have wanted wireless internet for a long time, so I managed to save enough cash to get one last fall. A friend installed it for me 2x. Unfortunately for me it failed 3x. The last time it took my desktop pc with it. Is there a way I can bypass my desktop, & just use my laptop, & netgear router, & dsl modem to re-establish a wireless connection? If so how? I cannot to pay my friend to do this for me again. If you can advise me please do. All help is much appreciated.

I just got a laptop and I am learning a little bit about them. Somebody said that I should get a wireless internet card. I got a router I have not used it yet but I have seen people with routers and I did't see a card. I sure that wireless is what it is but what is the range with a wireless card.

My labtop will not get on the internet, download or get on AIM. I have wireless internet. The home computer is working fine and the router seems to be pluged in correctly. It is saying that I have "excellent" connection. When I do try to get on to these applications, it states no server found or no host found. What could it be and how would I be able to fix it?

I just set up a LAN in my home and am wondering if there are any good free games that can be played over a LAN. My PC is running Vista Ultimate 64-bit and my laptop XP Home 32-bit, so the game must be compatible with both O.S.s (this throws Doom 95 out of the picture - it doesn't seem to like the networking too much on my Vista computer.) Game name + location appreciated. Remember - freeware, not trials!

i posted the question earlier about an adapter but the adapter cost almost as much as the cable does so no point in buying an adapter.

if i were to take 2 cables and take the lining off and make it as one, should i expect data loss?

I have cable broadband internet service with a Linksys wireless broadband router, SX-400, the fastest/strongest made when I bought it. I have 4 PC's on my home network, 3 desktops and 1 notebook. Two PC's are hardwired to the router; two are connecting wireless.
The problem is with keeping connectivity on the notebook. It connects on startup at 54 Mbps and then the speed starts to drop. Although it connects, pages are very slow to load, sometimes don't and I get a timed out error. Then when the speed gets to about 5.5 Mbps the pages load faster. But then after a short while the connection drops and I must reconnect, or it does it auto. Usually when the connection speed is in the 20/30 range, pages take a minute to load, or time out.

Please give me some suggestions on cause and on fixing. All other PC's connect fine.

I use a belkin wireless G Router - 2.4Ghz-802.11g for my two wireless computers upstairs for my children. When essex and parts of England had that really really bad strong wind, the wireless went down. No body else i knew who had wireless went down. Ever since the two computers upstairs internet wont work. It says it's connected and they have a good connection but it doesn't show any websites. In the back of the router there are 5 square holes and two wires. My son [who is quite good with computers sometimes] thinks the 2 wires have to be in specific holes, we cant remeber which as we tried fixing it and got them mucked up. My son has tried to put them it all different holes and try to get it working but it wont. Does any one else know how to get this working or have the same thing and know how to? If there is no success with these answers i will ring my ISP. Thanks

Lisa

So I am working for a client. He has his site hosted on ABC hosting company. His email address there is johndoe@acme.com

He also has Johndoe@acme at his registrar (godaddy.com) (Because he likes that interface better).

How do I make sure that he gets all his mails at his email address at godaddy.com

this is a tricky situation.
