i have a 6 mb line from my isp and i know im not getting the full 6 but my ping is really crappy at times , i have it going threw a linksys router , any help ? thank you

I would find out if your dropping packets.
The easiest way to check this initially would be to find the ip of a remote sight. perhaps the game server you connect to.

go to a command prompt and do a ping with large packets.
for instance ---- "ping (IP address) -t -l 1450

that will do a continous ping of 1450 packets to the ip address specified. let it run for a bit until you get a decent sample.. maybe 100 pings or so. then hit control + c to stop it.

look at the ping statistics summary. if it says packets sent = 100 packets receive = (less than 100) then it will say what % is lost.

if you are losing any then there may be a signal quality issue that you need to address with your ISP.

Now if you are not losing any you will want to make sure that you have nothing else running while you are doing your gaming and you have done all you can to make your connection good.

Would help if you had specified if this was DSL , cable or satelite.
