If you're running direct between the two network cards, you need to have a cross-over cable. This is a cable that you can either build or buy that has the transmit and receive pairs swapped. Computer equipment is considered DTE (Data Terminal Equipment), so you have to swap the transmit and receive pairs between the two DTE devices to make them communicate. If you go to a computer retailer, you can ask for a cross-over cable or lookup the specifications on the Internet to make one yourself.

If you have a hub or switch between the computers, you may have a bad cable or network card. A hub/switch is a DCE device (Data Communications Equipment). It automatically switches the transmit and receive pairs when you connect to it with a DTE. They are fairly cheap ($20-$50 for a 4-port) and required if you have more than two computers connected to each other.

The other option you have is to use a USB to USB cable to connect the computers. This is going to be slower than the network cable, unless you have USB 2.0 on both computers. Here's a link for cables to do just that:

Hope it helps,

using windows? well, first the cable to each computer has to be a 'CROSS OVER' cable. if it's not, then you get no connection. a router between them wouod correct this anomoly.
