I'm at University where we're only allowed one IP address and I have two computers. I can't use a router, but I've heard from some tech guy that if you have two nic cards on a pc, you can plug a pc into the network, and plug another machine into the other nic card and route the internet to the second. Is this a valid method of networking?

Like I said, I'd really love to use a router, but it's not an available option. I've thought of turning my PC into a server and plugging my mac in that way, but I'm not particularly sure of how to do that.

I'm not sure if I could use a switch either... \

thnx

I have a laptop computer that has a LAN access driver and claims to be Bluetooth enabled. I just got a Samsung SPH-a640 cell phone that is also Bluetooth enabled. Should the laptop not recognize the phone? I set the phone to be "always visible" and no matter what I do, the computer does not find the phone. Why? It should be able to do this wirelessly, right?

What determines if packets get switched using per packet versus per destination load balancing and how does this behavior change with and without CEF turned on? What are the defaults?

Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly enough. The router is located downstairs and not in my bedroom. I want to plug the NAS device into the routers ethernet port, but don't want to leave the NAS device downstairs as it may get stolen/ broken. So, I basically require a method which will allow the NAS device (from my bedroom) to access the router, without having a 30m ethernet cable running from my room to the router. The only ethernet ports in the entire house are on the router.

I therefore need a device which I can store in my bedroom, which has an ethernet port and can connect wirelessly to our internet connection. This is why I originally mentioned another router as an option, as opposed to a switch mechanism. I need something with wireless bridging capabilities.

Hope this is more clear?

Hello. The following question is for computer savy people. I am starting an education in computer support and have been able to obtain a Sun Microsystems Ultra 5 workstation. I am having a bear of a time trying to change its boot permissions so that I can use it as a UNIX / LINUX PC. I would like to do this for my career as I am mainly familiar with Windows based operating systems and issues at this point. My question is:

Where is the best place to go to get help in learning how to get this system to boot to the OS so that I may play around with UNIX and install LINUX at some point?

My cousins laptop is getting 3 signals and he chooses one and connects. i think 2 of those work, the other one doesn't.. and one says that is secured...so that one he cannot connect to.

I'm just thinking about this because if i knew which neighbors have this wireless unsecured, then i could go and tell them to secure it.

is has to be stated that watching a computer screen isn't healthy for your eyesight, especially when some people are online for long periods. With this in mind, why don't ISPs warn their members about eyesight difficulties, that are more than likely to occur, with continued use?
