I networked two pcs together with a crossover cable. When I enable the network connection, one pc says aquiring network address. It eventually fails and I can access all the shared files. I do not want it to try to connect to the internet. and have went through the settings several times, to see if there is something that I missed.. Any help would be appreciated.

I have two PC's, both are XP. They are networked, I would like to use one to scan the other for Viruses and Spyware!
Is it possible? If so how would I set it up to scan regularly?

I have a very old notebook that i want to network with my desktop computer. The notebook does not have a network adapter, any USB ports or a phone line connection and i dont want to by a network card for it. I want to know if there is a way to network the computers without spending to much money (no more than a few bucks for adapters). I have 25-pin serial cables i can use (I heard that you could netork two computers like that). I dont care what kind of network it is, i just want it to work. Oh, and my desktop is windows xp and the notebook is windows 98SE and i hav a wired/wireless router. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me.

i connect to internet by LAN and use windows'98. After a big storm often has to be created a new connection. The guys from the internet company are bored of this and i am afraid they won't want to restore it the next times when it happens. Last time it took 2 minutes for them to do it but i don't know how to restore the connection by myself. Does anyone can give me an advice? I think they restore the connection by NetworkNeighbourhood but i am not sure. Thanks.
