I networked two pcs together with a crossover cable. When I enable the network connection, one pc says aquiring network address. It eventually fails and I can access all the shared files. I do not want it to try to connect to the internet. and have went through the settings several times, to see if there is something that I missed.. Any help would be appreciated.

The two PC's are networked correctly, At least it works... What I mean is this PC when it connects to the network it trys to get addresses.. The other PC just connects, when I enable the connection. I do NOT want it to try to get the addresses, I just want it to connect to the network.

You must assign ip address for each pc.

Here is simplest way to do that:
Go to Control Panel -- > Network Connections then right click on your Local Area Connection, choose properties.
Locate The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), select and click properties.
Choose "Use the following IP address:" instead of "Obtain IP address automatically"
then:

1. For 1st pc:
Enter 192.168.0.1 in IP Address field and 255.255.255.0 in Subnet Mask field, leave the Default gateway and dns server settings blank.

2. For 2nd pc:
Enter 192.168.0.2 in IP Address field and 255.255.255.0 in Subnet Mask field, leave the Default gateway and dns server settings blank.

Thats all :)

You can verify the connection using ping command from your windows command prompt. (ping 192.168.0.1 from 2nd pc and ping 192.168.0.2 from 1st pc).

Are you trying to transfer files? or access files?
Seems like you have not run Network Set up Wizard properly?
Did you goto Control Panel > Network Set up Wizard?
Then in settings make sure you name computer? Like mycomputer1 and on the other computer mycomputer2
Then in wizard make sure your workgroup is the same? Like homenetwork1 ( I don't like using the default "WORKGROUP" setting ).
Did you do this on both computers?

If so you should not have any problems accessing the shared resourses unless you have not configured your firewall ( I know zonealarm needs this!! And XP firewall has a cow sometimes with it to). Otherwise if theres no firewall then?

Plus you are either connected to the other computer or not. You cannot access shared files if you are not connected.

It fails and you "can" access the shared files? What's the problem? If you "can't" access the shared files that is a problem. Use a straight (not crossover) cable and try to set up your network again.
