when I try to connect my laptop on, let's say the bus, would I be able to? Also, do I need to subscribe to an internet serve to log on to the internet from home (besides the hi-speed DSL networking service that I already have)

if youre on the bus, and moving....you would need a specific service. Otherwise you have to go to places that offer the wifi, for example borders

Verizon and Nextel offer good wifi plans, and give you great service. Our department uses nextel, and we're very satisfied with it. If you had a Nextel service card, then you would be able to use it on the bus. It can be very costly though, but I recommend getting one and trashing your home internet plan.

If you decide to just use your home plan..then get a wireless router from Best Buy. You do not need to pay for service, but you do need to buy the router. They range from 30-100 bucks usually, and let you pick up wireless throughout your house through the laptops already built in antenna

BUT its not worth it if you only have the laptop. if you just have a laptop, drop your home service, and get a network card

Wi-Fi stands for wireless technology, i cannot understand what you are trying to do, but you cannot connect wireless usinfg cables.
for your wireless to work you need a wireless router which can be a B or G depending on the capability of your wireless card on the computer. you can buy a wireless router from any hardware store and the install is very simple, bgut do not forget to enable security feature so that nobody can steal your wireless connection.
if you want to use your internet connection on the bus, you will have to get the service from verizon or some other company, they will give you a extension card which you can simply plug into your laptop and will be able to access internet anywhere in the country
