Computers & Internet - 20 December 2007

I've tried OpenOffice, and while it seems ok, I figured it wasn't worth spending time learning because I have Microsoft Office. But I'm curious to know what are some other open source programs and how do they compare with their popular Windows counterparts.

I would be especially interested in programs like PhotoShop, FreeHand, Publisher, and others.

For what it's worth, I already use Filezilla for FTP.

it has a vga output with only two rows of pins but my vga cable has 3, also i have two nvidia graphics cards there and when i put the cable into one of them it still says no signal any ideas?

the pen drive when connected is seen to recognised " new hardware found ", but neither the l.e.d glows, nor is it shown in the disk drive list , and nor am i able to format it..........can any one suggest what is the matter and what can i do about it ?

My budget is Rs. 1Lakh ($2000).The Desktop will be an assembled one and will be used for running heavy softwares like MAYA and the Laptop will be used for the presentation of my work. copied pictures onto a cd-rw. After I checked to see if it all went well, put the disc back into the tray and clicked onto computer to run the disc, then all of a sudden the drive D just vanished. I'm running Vista. What the hell do I do now.

I am in a PSP ( Paint shop Pro) group. Sometimes they upload files for us. when I try to download it, it will only let me save it as a Document, but its a ZIP file, with .Gif pictures in them
Everyone else can download it, I can even download it on the wifes laptop, transfer it to my PC and then open it with no problem,
When the same file is uploaded to Megaload, I can get it and unzip it.
I have no problem downloading from anywhere else.
I have Winzip, Winrar and Extractnow so I have no problem unzipping, there are no filters on here, I am useing Windows XP Pro.
It is not the unzipping that is the problem. it is the fact that I can only SAVE it as a Document
Enyone any ideas why I can't download this file as a Zip file

I have a crossover cable that I want to use to connect my PC (the moniotr gave in yesterday) to my Laptop. Now, I do understand how to do it (found instructions o nthe web) but cannot view my PC to configure the network setup. So what to do? Can I connect the monitor cable from the PC to the Laptop somehow and then view the Pc's desktop? Thanks.

Well, I have Windows Vista Basic, but when I try to install it, it is suppose to give me two choices.

1."Upgrade" Keeps all files, programs, etc.
2. "New" Deletes everything and gives you a clean start to install on.

I want to "upgrade" it but it says that I need 6503MB free space on my C: partion or something like that in order to do this.

Can anyone tell me what that is and how to clear more space?

The cable guy came to the house and set up the modem and everything. He tried several things. The proxy was good, etc. He says that it looks like a virus. I downloaded the latest avg setup files onto my flash drive and then put them on my mom's computer and set up avg. I did a complete scan...It says that there are no viruses on the computer. It still can't access the Internet. What should I do?

It has something on it about single people ,and flying a private jet ,dropping fuel on endangered species. It just comes outta nowhere,only lasts for a few seconds,repeating every few minutes. I'm only logged on to Y.A. nothing else. Is it a virus?
