First of all, Hi! A bit is a state which can represent on or off, true or false, 0s or 1s. Why a bit can have only two values? A: That is because, in a cable can only have two states (cable with source (the light bulb will turn on),otherwise, cable without source (the light bulb will be off)). A microprocessor consists of billions of transistor. A transistor is an electronic device which behave like an on/off switch. A working microprocessor turn on | off the switch billion of times per second. A microprocessor with 64 bits means that It can handle (process) 64 bits at a time. A microprocessor speed is measured in Hz, today most microprocessor has 1 Ghz or more which means that it can process 1 Billion instructions per second, in other words if you have a 64 bits microprocessor your microprocessor can process a big arithmetic operation by using only one instruction of the microprocessor. Otherwise, if you have a 32 bits microprocessor, the microprocessor will need 2 instructions instead of one (less performance). Inside a computer everything (operating system, software, user data (audio, video, word files) ) consists of pattern of 0s or 1s. A program is also a pattern of 0s and 1s which is different in that, this one tell the processor what to do and how to interpret data in such format as audio, word, excel and so on as input which is also a pattern of bits. Best wishes, Carlos.

what I just wrote there is a 16 bit binary number. there are 16 digits (either 1 or 0), so its said to be 16 bits long

In a 16 bit processor, the registry are all 16 bits, that means each registry are 16 bits in size
