sorry I did not mention that i did not want the text to be deleted along with the tables!

No, you need to select one table at a time, then choose Table -> Convert -> Table to text...

(Word 2003 and prior)

Of course you can. if your word document is completely filled with tables, the simply press Ctrl + A then press delete or backspace.
If you want to do it individually, simply go to the upper left portion of the table until arrows going up down left right in a box appear, click it and press delete.
