I have a crossover cable that I want to use to connect my PC (the moniotr gave in yesterday) to my Laptop. Now, I do understand how to do it (found instructions o nthe web) but cannot view my PC to configure the network setup. So what to do? Can I connect the monitor cable from the PC to the Laptop somehow and then view the Pc's desktop? Thanks.

Take your PC and laptop into a local big box computer retailer and ask if you can borrow the use of their tech department monitors. From there you can configure the PC's network.

If they say no, ask to speak to a manager, it is a very reasonable request.

That is no problem, unless you are using a DVI connector for the monitor- in that case you will need an adapter to convert to DB15.

How is he going to see his desktop PC to configure VNC? How would running IPconfig on his laptop give him the ip address for the PC??? Go back to scrub school

Try using the Tight VNC software. Install as the server in your PC and install as the viewer in the Laptop. You will then be able to see the PC desktop on your laptop and work accordingly.

In order to know the ip address of your pc, just try ipconfig in the command prompt of your computer. I think that should do it.

if your laptop has a 15pin connector on it, it should be the monitor connector. sure hook up the rgb monitor.

if your laptop has an S-Video connector find an S-video cable with 4 pins and connect it to some tv with s-video connector. Don't mind that the S-video connector on the laptop has more holes than 4, more like 6.

You want to use the laptop's monitor to view the PC's desktop, because the desktop's monitor failed...
tough, unless you have already configured remote desktop.
If not...

Well you could try:

WINDOW KEY -C- ENTER -N- ENTER- TAB-TAB-TAB-DOWN ARROW - ENTER - ENTER - ENTER (wait for 20 seconds) ENTER- TAB (type the word computer1) TAB -TAB - TAB - ENTER (type the word homenet) TAB -TAB - ENTER - TAB - TAB - ENTER - ENTER (wait a full two minutes) DOWN ARROW-DOWN ARROW-DOWN ARROW- TAB - ENTER - TAB - TAB - TAB - ENTER (wait ten seconds) ENTER

At this point your computer should restart, with the comptername computer1 in the workgroup homenet. Your shared files will be visable across the network.
