Media Player says "No dvd decoder". Would it be better to buy what Microsoft recommends or buy something listed on eBay such as VLC Player? Thank you for your input.

I am worried about hardware compatibility, and most importantly, whether the hardware will work harmoniously together and whether I can get all the power out of the parts I buy. I don't want to put a load of money in it if I can't get what it's worth out of it, ya know?
So basically, I'm wondering if prebuilt PCs from say Dell have hardware chosen based on compatibility, and how I can achieve this kind of harmony and efficiency?

it seems my mobo has no connection for SATA, the stuff was bought five years ago, P4S8X.
and i had this hard drive which i want to recover which is (unfortunately in my system's case) SATA.
IDE is the master. please help me.

I've been having these kinds of problems for around one week now. First, my adsl-box went crazymode, and suddenly it wasn't connected anymore, and therefore I had to restart the adsl-box around 5 times a day, which was quite annoying. After 2 days of this, I started having the problems that I now have had for the ~1 week.
My problem: I don't know how often this happens, around once every hour or so, but suddenly my web browser stops working. It's the same thing with mozilla and IE, it just wont load anything for around 1-2 minutes, after which it's all back to normal. The funny part is that all my internet games / chat programs work just fine, and I only notice this when I am doing something with the web browser.
Anyone know how to fix this or has / has had similar problems?

If I use a stanard keyboard that plugs in to the computer it will work perfect. I only have trouble when I use a wireless keyboard. It seems to be when I plug the receiver for the keyboard in to the USB port. If I unplug the receiver from the computer first then start up the computer and plug the receiver in after it as started up it will work o.k. I think it may be something in the BIOS settings but not sure.

I just got done doing a microsoft update so I had to restart it restarted and it got to the XP Loading screen with the lil loading bar under it and then it restarts, and it will keep doing that over and over and over...i cant get into safe mode cuz it will do the same thing and I cant use "last known config that worked good"....anyone knows what is happenin and how i can fix it?

i tried using system recovery but..... it just restarted.... now im stuck with the NTLDR is missing thing...

My computer just woke me up make this noise.

First off, I know a lot about computers but this is really puzling me.

You know how when you load a program or a website your computer makes the "gringing..or growling" sound more or less making the "working sound".

Well, it woke me up sounds like a clock doing it EVERY second, and it wont stop. It sounds like it kinda ticking.

YES this sounds weird. I KNOW!

I did the control alt delete, there are no weird programs running, I restarted it, shut it down for 5 mins and started it back up, etc. etc. Its still doing it.

Does anyone have ANY idea what it is?

It has been on for a few days in a row, we work on it. The screen saver was on.

We just did a scan disk and defragment (matter of a fact, its how the PC sounds, when you defrag a computer).

Also, we haved blown it out with air lately? Could it be the fan not working?

I dont know...

I am shutting it down for now, thanks in advance for ANY help!

Hey guys right now my laptop is reinstalling windows xp pro sp2. i had all the old partitions delted, and now its installing windows. Will i have to harline in so i can set up my drivers for my built in wireless card etc etc, becuase i no longer have the drivers cd that my laptop came with?

Many of the web hosting companies provide free wysiwyg tools and "free" photos and images that people can use to build their own website. My question is, if I use these tools and create my own site can I later easily transfer it to another web host. Aight so my PC originally had 512MB of ram (2x256MB) and i wanted to upgrade to 1GB. So I bought one stick of 512MB 3200 RAM (which IS the correct ram for my computer. Then I installed the RAM but system properties/BIOS/task manager were all showing about 768 or so.

I took out the orginal 2 and just left my new 512MB of ram and it showed up as 512MB so it's not the RAM. I've checked each slot and they all work properly. My PC has 4 slots and when i arrange the 3 cards in certain orders i a different reading of RAM (between 512 and 768 and 256). I have heard that someone had a problem where they just needed use either all 512MB or all 256MB and that it didn't work when he tried to mix.

I believe it might be my new 256DDR2 MB video card stealing an extra 256MB but wouldn't i still see 1GB in BIOS or Task Manager?

If it is my card how can i find out via BIOS? and how do i stop it from stealing RAM via BIOS? Or what else could it be?

1) Do you really think that the "Scary Maze" has to be modified or should there be a official sequel? If ever there would be a sequel, the picture and the sound should be the scariest, most evil, and most gory screamer. Should there also be a sign that this is not a screamer? I think most of us Windows users have used Paint once or twice. It's one of the most basic photo editing tools in... well, probably existence. Anyway, I've been dabbling in this program lately, finding things out about it. Normally my photo editing wouldn't be a problem because I own Paint Shop Pro, but I'm currently in a position where I can't get to my home computer. So, yeah. I noticed that in some instances, if you put just white on a photo, and paste it into another photo, the white background will be gone and it will turn transparent...

In what way does the white turn transparent, because other times I've tried it didn't work. What do I do to make sure the backgrounds turn transparent every time?

hi,

I have a dhcp connection.
I have a computer with 2 ethernet cards on it.
eth0 and eth1(I've added eth1,a realtek).
I put the interwebz cable on eth0 and it works using the
following script to aquire an IP.
Code:
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 hw ether mac
ifconfig eth0 up
dhclient3 eth0
and I get an Ip for eth0 and all works well,I can ping,I can access
the interwebz no problem.
however,if I switch the cable to eth1 and I do

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth1 down
ifconfig eth1 hw ether same_mac_as_for_eth0
ifconfig eth1 up
dhclient3 eth1
it tells me it has acquired an IP and all,but when I do
ping www.google.com I get unknown host www.google.com.
I also must note that there are no physical problems because
the led on the eth1 is blinking and its alive.
is there some kind of default ethernet interface wich I must set ?
what is the problem ?
why doesn't eth1 work like eth0 works ?
