Sounds like the old Windows Update creating more problems than it fixed ... I recently had a similar experience with updating Vista Home Basic to Home Premium ... downloaded and installed fine ... told me to go activate which I did ... next reboot said hard-drive needs to be checked recommend a scandisk or chkdisk or whatever the current flavour is .... now won't boot because it has an error loading the OS ... mines under warranty so they can fix it .... although I'll loose any data and files ... seems the more stuff changes ...the more it stays the same ...siiiiigh

open up the box and remove the cmos battery for 90 seconds

use another puter and check this microsoft support link
http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?query=restarts+continuously&catalog=LCID%3D1033&pd=&spid=1173&mode=r&lsc=0

i suggest not to do microsoft updates, just windows updates

you can change the microsoft update back to windows by clicking on settings

because you did a microsoft update do this when you got your puter working

Slow computer IE freezes
==================
Note: only have to do Safe mode if the files will not delete in normal mode. Try normal first.

Slowly tap the F8 key while the computer is powering up

Just after Verifying DMI files occurs the F8 key will point the computer to a menu where safe mode can be selected.

Note if you mistakenly tap F8 key again, it will continue through to normal boot

Scroll and select safe mode with network

Use explorer to delete the contents of the folder datastore.

Datastore can be found in c:\windows\softwaredistribution.

You may have to do this regularly when the computer slows.

The folder rebuilds itself and the contents are to do with windows updates and logs for errors. There is no harm in deleting the contents.

Reboot.

Also
Over time IE7 seems to set its own (or programs do) tick boxes in the advance tab.
In IE7 (IE6) Tools >Internet Options >Advance Tab
Click Restore advance settings defaults
Tick empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache)
Bullet disable phishing filter
Delete Browser History, cookies the whole lot regularly.
Close the browser to set the settings.

sounds like the o/s is corrupt on the hard drive

try the system restore option in safe mode. press f8 as the system boots, then choose safe mode with net support, when prompted, choose restore my computer to an earlier date

a calendar will appear..............look for the lastest date in bold blue before your most recent changes.......

follow the prompts

hopefully you will be good to go after the subsequent info is restored and the system reboots..

if not, restore the system from a backup.....

if you dont have one time to reload the o/s

I hate when this happens.

Try starting with the XP disc in the CD tray. Reload XP, then do your on-line updates (again).

It may work, and probably couldn't hurt. No, you shouldn't lose data. Windows will reload XP in the current locations.
