Media Player says "No dvd decoder". Would it be better to buy what Microsoft recommends or buy something listed on eBay such as VLC Player? Thank you for your input.

You should download video codeces for the Media Player. Search for the "K-Lite Codeces Pack Full" on Google, download and install it. Maybe it might work then? And also install the drivers from your motherboard CD as well if you haven't yet!
