This a problem which normally happen with some laptops, the main problem came from your RAM and in most terrible cases your motherboard. The problem came as a result of your RAM and some components on your board not being able to register the presence of your CD or DVD driver. Sometimes this problem can be as a result of dust accumulation which can cause over heating of your system.
What many of the other answerers have said is correct to some extent, that is put off your system, allow it to cool for a while and then boot it again. This will work for some time until the problem will become more frequent!!!!
I will advise that (if you can't then to the experts), you open your system and have the dust that might have accumulated vacuumed off.
Once you have done this then your system can last for sometime before you see the problem again. But ultimately, you may have to change your motherboard.
Good luck

It happens in XP too. It is somewhat flactuation of the power over the IDE cable, and then suddenly, the drive vanishes. I had encounter this many times. What I did was:
1. Turn Off my PC. Unplug it. Open the System Tower (System Unit) unplug the IDE cable connection, *i say a lil prayer* then plug again..lol i mean try to clean it by using smooth brush.
2. Boot PC

Power PC off and then back on again, see if it returns, if not, try powering PC off, remove disc MANUALLY (use the small hole in front, gently insert straightened paperclip, press to unlock drawer,a and remove disc), OR as soon as power is applied press the eject button, BEFORE the PC reads the disc, and get it iout that way-
Power PC on again, if it returns OK; it''s a disc that didn't burn fully correctly causing the explorer engine to lock up-.

Your using it right tell it vanished, just pull the IDE cable and put it back again also the power cable. Restart computer and booth again.
Better upgrade memory, since I had just repair just like reaction such as this. I just change and add its memory sticks for a higher capacity.
Note also your capacity of memory needed on your unit and its compatability of your unit, in using two memory sticks.
