Maintenance & Repairs - June 2007

My used car has started to act wierd sometimes, for some reason the car can't be turned on every once in a while. There is no power from the battery I assume, CD player doesn't work, power windows, alarm, no light etc. Most times though, it's turns on fine, no problem.

My mechanic checked to see that battery is ok and there doesn't look like a short or anything he could find. Also he said that he doused the entire inside under the hood with water as it usually does this after it rains, no problem. The damn thing is playing with me and only does it when no one is around. I usually just wait a while like an idiot and after a few tries it works.

I'm just afraid that one day... IT WON'T WORK. Can anyone help or have anyone experienced the same thing. According to the mechanic the battery should be fine.

How can I tell when my car's air filter needs to be changed? It's not buried under under an inch of dust - but there is a light film of dust on all the surfaces. Are there any photos out there that will teach me to tell the difference between fine and replace?

We took our 2004 Geo Prisim to a shop and told them the AC was not working nor was the fan; They charged us $270.00 to fix it (saying the fan only was broken, not the AC)
the AC worked twice and stopped; We took it back and the ownwer said the compressor was no good and it would cost $500.00. I think they should have fixed it right the first time or at least put the $270.00 towards a compressor. Am I right or wrong?

I have a 1993 ES 300 Lexus, I got this car from the auction and it has a bad miss fire. I took the car to a shop to get a scan on it and they told me that I need to change the knock sensor for the car to stop shaking. I changed that at a different shop. The car is still shaking like a mini bike. So I took the car to the Lexus dealer and they said, clean the EGR valve and change the Modulator, and oxygen sensor. I did that and its still shaking.
I changed the spark plugs, wires, cap, roder, still shakes. Is the motor gone or what? It has 140miles on it. I went to a salvage yard and they said they have a motor for that car for 600. should I just get it? I live in Los Angeles if anyone have a shop i can go to let me no the number please.

Hi, my car failed to start and was wondering if it was possibly because there isn't sufficient motor oil. It finally started after I applied a bit of gas whilst starting. I'm a novice and was wondering if I wanted to change the oil, is it best to ask a garage to do it? or is it quite simple to do it yourself? How much does a garage charge? Thanks.

I had to take my car (2004 Toyota Corolla S) into an auto body repair shop to get some recent damage fixed. Yesterday I got a call from the shop letting me know that there has been extensive previous damage to my car that was left unrepaired and the only repairs made were done to cover up the internal damage.

I've never been in this situation before and I don't know what my rights are or if I have any.

The dealership I bought this car from ripped me off on the price of the car and the interest rate of the loan. Now to find out that there has been previous damage that was merely covered up just kills me. I bought the car over a year ago.

What can I do?

I am doing some work on my friend's cavalier but need some help. I could drain all the dluid by taknig out the pan. I guess this is how I COULD drain it. But is there a more "proper way"? Also, how would I go about refilling the tranny fluid on a automatic 1996 Cavalier 2.2? Thanks guys and gals.

hey, i live in Lorton, VA and i'm having a hard time finding a auto repair shop (the phone book has too many) around here that has a good reputation and isn't too expensive. right now i need to get some repairs done because my car is finally showing it's age but i'm tired of getting estimations for ridiculous amounts of money, especially when the parts needed for the repairs may cost $10 (ex; exhaust flange $6.00 repair using this part, $300). i don't have a problem with paying "a lot" if the customer service is great, because i do understand that i have an expensive vehicle. any suggestions for the following are appreciated. thank you ^.^

window repair shops (motors are dying)
auto body shops
auto repair shops

I have a 99 Durango thats making an odd, loud, and annoying vibration coming from the rear end. It has brand new tires on it so its not that. I checked the u-joints and they seem fine(No play). It starts around 45 all the way up and gets louder as you go faster. It totally goes away when you let off the gas. I can really notice it if i stomp on the gas. I also checked the fluid in the rear end and it is fine. I was thinking it might be the rear end or wheel bearings but would like some other ideas. Any help would be great before i start pouring more money into this piece of junk. Thanks

I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent. I had the tires balanced and rotated yesterday because the car was shaking a lot and seemed very wobbly at certain speeds. I figured this would take care of the problem. It took car of most of the problems but now at slow speeds the car kind of wobbles side to side a bit (mostly when slowing down). Any idea what else it could be. I hope it's nothing serious because I don't have the money to take care of this right now.

Here's my dilemma, my brakes just started squealing last week on Tuesday (only the front driver side brake is squealing). I got several quotes from shops and all range from $700-$800 bucks (I need a full brake job). Money I don't have because I have not been able to find employment up until yesterday (June 7). I start working on the 12th, and this job requires driving and is out a distance from my home (3 miles). I have been taking it easy by driving only when I have to and on surface streets and not speeding. What I want to know is with light driving will my brake hold out until I get that almighty first pay check?

Also, my owners manual says the noise is a safety feature to let me know to replace the pads soon, but what's that time frame?
